Heartburn Treatment

heartburnDr. Jesse Lopez is now performing a new in-office endoscopic procedure for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the condition that causes chronic heartburn.

The Stretta procedure involves delivery of radiofrequency energy to the lower esophageal sphincter to improve the barrier function of the valve, reduce reflux, and improve GERD symptoms. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and is performed by endoscopy with the patient under conscious sedation. Most patients go home approximately 1-2 hours after the procedure and typically resume normal activities the following day.

Multiple clinical studies have shown that the Stretta procedure can reduce GERD symptoms, reduce acid exposure in the esophagus, and reduce the patient's need for ongoing drug therapy to control symptoms.

The Stretta procedure may be an option for GERD patients who have inadequate symptom control on prescription medications and desire a less invasive option than anti-reflux surgery. If you have GERD symptoms and are not achieving good control through lifestyle modification or medications such as Prilosec, Prevacid, Nexium, Tagamet or Zantac, you may want to consider this minimally invasive procedure.

Dr. Lopez is board-certified in general surgery and has been in practice for over ten years. He joined College Park Surgical Specialties' staff in January 2000.
