What got me interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare field:
After college as I was applying to Medical Schools, I worked at Children’s Mercy Hospital. I worked very closely with the most wonderful team of oncologist, and realized that this only strengthened my desire to learn more and pursue a medical degree so that I could help others. Along the way, I learned about the Physician Assistant profession and realized it was a perfect fit for me. I truly believe that without my four year of experience at CMH. Observing the care, compassion and depth of knowledge the doctors I worked for had, that I would not be the practitioner I am today.
Core beliefs about practicing medicine:
Many, if not nearly all, medical providers feel that education for patients is critical. I have had this core belief even during my PA training. I feel the more education I provide my patients about their condition or disease, the more empowered they become. I also strive to have my patients take an active role in their treatment as they are more likely to adhere to treatment if they helped design the treatment plan.
My interests/hobbies:
I find that doing things such as gardening or painting very therapeutic. I love to refinish old furniture. In my days before my three small children, I would snow ski, water ski, hike and play softball.
Family:
My husband, Brett, is a partner/owner of Griffith Engineering. He is a mechanical engineer who was determined to introduce the full number line, including negative numbers, to our children at the age of 2 or 3. He’s now re-thought that! Currently, chasing three children age 5 and under is all the entertainment we need.
My Favorite Personal Quote:
“ A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove…..but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child. “
